Plant-Based Barbecue Alternatives

6 PlantBased Meat Alternatives for Your Next Summer BBQ!

Maybe about ten years ago, BBQ season would’ve been difficult for a plant-based eater because when you think of BBQs, you think of meat! Luckily, with the high demand for plant-based products/replacements and the increase in a plant-based diet, there are as many options as omnivores. So whether you want to make delicious appetizers for BBQ or a beyond burger, I have the ULTIMATE plant-based BBQ guide for you!

You do not need to be plant-based to enjoy yummy meatless BBQ options! If you are consciously trying to reduce your meat consumption or merely looking to grill or skew up (pun intended!) your food options, then you are starting at the right place! So, where do you start? Well, as I mentioned earlier, 2020 is a great time to begin exploring plant-based meals because they are easily accessible and can be found in most grocery stores.

So, what can be substituted? Well, just about anything and everything can be made plant-based! Nowadays, many whole grain burgers, veggie dogs, coconut cheese, plant-based condiments, and vegan recipes replicate traditional BBQ dishes. These substitutes are great because they are healthier and have similar flavors and textures to the original product.

Beyond Burger

The Beyond-burger is all the rage because not only is it jammed packed with protein, it tastes, smells, and looks like a beef patty! Instead, they contain beet juice, a vibrant red color to mimic the natural juices of a beef patty! Bring these patties to your next BBQ to keep the traditional hamburger around minus the meat! The Beyond brand also has hot links and ground beef substitutes!

Field Roast Hot Dogs

Field roast hot dogs are an excellent substitute for “pork” hot dogs! These hot dogs contain 21 grams of protein per dog and are full of flavor and herbs! A great substitute if you are looking to keep a more traditional BBQ menu going. Pair these dogs on a pretzel bun, topped with grilled onions and condiments!

BBQ Jackfruit

Do not judge a fruit by its look because jackfruit has been proven that good things come in different shapes, sizes, and looks! Once you crack open a jackfruit, you are left with excellent “pulled pork,” a product that makes it a great plant-based option for the summer! BBQ-Jackfruit is best known for its “pulled-pork” like consistency but can also be used in making tacos as well. For example, although jackfruit only has 1 gram of protein, it is a nutrient-dense food. This is an excellent substitute for animal pork with only 45 calories per serving and zero trans fats and cholesterol! So pair this on a bun with coleslaw and vegan mac and cheese!

Vegan American Style Cheese

If you have never been exposed to vegan cheese, you’d probably be shocked at the number of options available! Not only do dairy-free cheeses LOOK like cheese. They taste, smell, and even melt like cheese as well! Plant-based cheese can be made from almonds, cashews, coconut, and nut products. Vegan cheese is still a great source to obtain calcium! Sliced cheese can go well with burgers and sandwiches, while shredded cheese can be paired with tacos or nachos!

Mayo

Within the evolution of the plant-based diet, vegan condiments were created! Although some condiments are naturally vegan, such as ketchup, mustard, and bbq sauce. But what about mayo? You can’t have a burger without mayo! Not only can you find regular mayo, but you can also find flavored mayo if your taste buds want to change things up!

Dairy-Free Salad Dressing

Nothing like pairing your BBQ dish with a refreshing side salad! If you are in a bind and can not find a fast and easy recipe, do not fret! There are plenty of dressing options to choose from to top your salad! When looking for the right dressing, always look at the ingredients to ensure the dressing does not contain egg or dairy products.
