How to choose, cook, and store pumpkin

Did you know that there are different varieties of pumpkins for various purposes? So, a pumpkin meant for carving may not be the best choice for eating.

Regardless of the purpose for which you need the pumpkin, always pick healthy and mature pumpkins with tough rinds. Ignore pumpkins with punctures, cuts, and moldy spots as they are unhealthy.

The different types of pumpkins are as follows:

Varieties of pumpkins:

  • Jack-o-lantern: These large pumpkins are meant for carving. Due to their watery texture and bland flavor, they are not the best choice for cooking and eating.
  • Pie pumpkins: These pumpkins are succulent and sweet. They are smaller than carving pumpkins and packed with flavor. Choose pie pumpkins for all your cooking and baking needs.

How to cook:

To cook a medium-size five-pound pumpkin, follow these steps:

  1. Wash and rinse the pumpkin till it is clean. Pat it dry with a paper towel.
  2. Make the first cut in such a way that you divide the pumpkin into half. Then cut each half into pieces.
  3. With a scoop, remove the mushy part with the seeds from the pumpkin. Set the seeds aside for roasting.
  4. You can steam, boil, microwave, bake, or grill the cut pumpkin pieces. To check whether it is cooked, pierce it with a fork. It is cooked when tender.
  5. Peel the pumpkin skin and separate it from the pulp before mashing it.
  6. After removing the quantity that you need, place the remaining portion in a container. You can label it and freeze it for later use.
